Brazilian-born Carla Hassett brings the exotic beats of her homeland to the stage at Room 5 on Friday, February 17 at 9:00 PM to kick off Carnaval, the traditional festival leading up to Lent. Diving deeper into her Brazilian roots which have inspired her musically throughout her life, Carla creates a bilingual landscape of songs and stories based on life and love and loss and redemption.

Carla’s music is a blend of sexy samba and the slow groove of American soul. Singing in both English and Portuguese, Carla takes her audience back to her upbringing in São Paulo and Chicago; back to the rhythms that made her fall in love with music and captured her spirit forever.

“I want to take my audience back to the music that defined me as an artist,” says Carla. “Growing up in Chicago in a very Brazilian home where we spoke only Portuguese, I fell in love with the samba, bossa nova, and MPB that my parents played, as well as the soul and pop music on the radio; music like Bill Withers, Al Green, Steely Dan and Fleetwood Mac.”

Carla has traversed the globe, touring and recording with popular acts such as Sergio Mendes, Norah Jones, Thomas Dolby, Solomon Burke, Mike Patton, Billy Idol, Mimi Betinis, Gino Vannelli and others. She has lent her vocals to projects that include Robert Towne’s (Chinatown and Tequila Sunrise) feature film Ask the Dust (starring Colin Farrell and Salma Hayek)and the animated feature film Rio. Carla continues to work as a performing and studio vocalist, while avoiding detention slips as a teacher of music at Flea’s Silverlake Conservatory of Music.
